Chapter Zero/IOD
Putting climate change on the Boardroom agenda

For New Zealand to support the global goal to achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2050, it’s imperative the country’s business community takes action.

To support this, in March 2022, the Institute of Directors (IoD) launched Chapter Zero New Zealand – a local chapter of the global Climate Governance Initiative (CGI) to help directors to effectively govern organisations in their response to climate change.

Anthem joined Chapter Zero NZ as the official communications partner to elevate the work that IoD is doing to provide New Zealand directors with the tools, resources and information needed to lead and influence decision making that will mitigate the effects of climate change.

To mobilise the New Zealand director community and drive registrations to Chapter Zero NZ, Anthem led media relations that highlighted the need for directors to be armed with the most up-to-date climate change information utilising Chapter Zero webinars, events and online resources to add to the conversation around climate change.

After a successful launch, with coverage secured in RadioNZ, Anthem secured an exclusive interview with NZ Herald’s Grant Bradley with Air New Zealand Chair Dame Therese Walsh and CEO Greg Foran to talk about how the Board and Executive team has worked to make climate change a business priority. The article was also accompanied by a video of the interview.

Anthem also secured a story in Farmers Weekly where Rob Hewett (Silver Ferns Farms Director) and Scott St John (Fonterra Director) talked about how they’re galvanising the agri sector to ensure sustainable farming and business practices remain a priority.

To support communicating for climate change, Anthem developed the Climate Lexicon for directors and others who want to better communicate their contribution to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2050. The Lexicon explains some of the key terminology around climate, sustainability, international reporting frameworks and New Zealand’s climate change agenda.

As of December 2022, the Lexicon is one of the top viewed resources on the Chapter Zero NZ website and comparable to the top 25% of best performing content on the IoD website.

Anthem’s Executive Chair and Co-Founder Jane Sweeney facilitated a ‘Communicating for climate’ webinar, providing practical advice for directors and management about effectively communicating their organisation’s climate story. Jane discussed how evolving reporting standards provide New Zealand companies the opportunity to tell the full story about their organisation’s climate impacts and achievements.

The webinar was accompanied by an article in the IoD’s Boardroom magazine (print and online) by Jane explaining how organisations can get ahead of the curve and seize the reputation-building opportunity that excellence in climate reporting presents.
